Oprah restated last night on national television a statement that has captivated the nation, “Your Truth.” I write this not to diminish the speech that the gave last night, much of it was good about standing up to sexual assault. But the two words that keep standing out to me are “your truth.”
In the context that this phrase has been used the most through media outlets (social, news, physical) “your truth” has replaced the standard phrase of this is what I believe. Belief and views are two totally separate things in basic definition. Beliefs change. Truth is immutable.
Speaking your beliefs is one thing and should be encouraged, but say this is “their truth” or “that truth” in itself is a move to help shift others basic beliefs about truth over to someone else’s beliefs. It in itself is a logical fallacy. In a world where arguments keep getting more and more heated let’s at least use proper terms.
